Flora and Fauna of Lemuria  P.1 Page en Français

by Adrian Skerrett

One of the pleasures of a stay at the Lemuria Resort is the chance to enjoy the marvelous grounds and golf course surrounding the hotel.  With its mixture of garden, wilderness and pools, the grounds of Lemuria Resort offer some of the richest habitat in the country for the flora and fauna of Seychelles.

The Plants

The gardens have examples of all those plants we associate with the tropics; the creamy-petalled Frangipani, and the graceful drooping bells of the Hibiscus.

A white hibiscus flower, less common than the red one

A bright pink Barringtonia flower

Another notable large tree is the Barringtonia. This bears large fruits, almost square in shape, which give the tree its other name of Fish Poison Tree because they contain a chemical which is used in parts of the tropics to stun fish in rock pools, thus making them easier to catch.

There are many fruit trees around the gardens such as the Pawpaw, not a tree in fact, but a gigantic herb, with the fruits clustered beneath the parasol of leaves at the top.

The fruits turn from green to orange or yellow

An adult coco-de-mer palm tree and its nut

Endemic palms dominate the hillside.  There are six species unique to Seychelles including the famous Coco de Mer. This tree bears the largest seed of the world, whose shape is evocative of the female pelvis. It is very slow-growing, taking 25 years to reach maturity and living for 200 years or more. Found only in Praslin and Curieuse, its stronghold is the Vallée de Mai.
